A Beginner’s Map of Fragrance Families

A Beginner's Map of perfume bottle by Johar

Product descriptions throw a lot of vocabulary at you. Here is the short version of what each family smells like and who tends to reach for it.

Oud & Amber

Deep, resinous, warm. Oud is the resin of the agarwood tree and it is the backbone of traditional perfumery across this region. Amber adds sweetness and warmth underneath. This family is heavy, unmistakable and made for evenings and cold weather. Try: Musk Al Malik, Oudh Mubarak.

Rose & Floral

Not the thin soapy rose of cheap perfume โ€” a real rose absolute is jammy, slightly spiced and surprisingly complex. Jasmine and tuberose are richer and more nocturnal. This family reads as occasion-wear here. Try: Gulab-e-Johar, Chandni.

Musk & Skin Scents

Clean, soft, close to the body. Musk smells like warm skin and fresh laundry rather than like a perfume. It is the safest family for offices and close quarters, and the best base to layer other things over. Try: Noor, Meherbaan.

Woody & Citrus

Bright at the top, dry underneath. Bergamot or grapefruit over cedar and vetiver. This is the family that survives Karachi humidity best, because the wood holds on after the citrus has burned off. Try: Safar, Bahadur.

Leather & Tobacco

Suede, sweet pipe tobacco, a little smoke. Reads as mature and expensive, and needs cool air to sit properly. Try: Shaheen.

How to actually choose

Ignore all of this and order the Discovery Box. Six 3ml vials for Rs. 1,490, and the full amount comes off whichever bottle you buy afterwards. Reading about fragrance families is useful; smelling five of them on your own skin over a week is decisive.
